What is a journey without a few bumps in the road? Hitting the stage this August, Calgary flutist Sarah MacDonald and Edmonton pianist Leanne Regehr present Postcards from An Imaginary Vacation both in-person and through a free livestream broadcast.

Despite having to cancel the concert three times in the past year due to the pandemic, the show is set to go on at the Polaris Centre for the Performing Arts.

“Here is hoping the fourth time’s the charm,” says MacDonald in a statement. “It took a lot of planning, patience, and persistence, but we are thrilled to be able to perform—not only for the livestream broadcast but also for the live audience!”

The concert features works inspired by different countries and styles. The musical journey begins with the beautiful cascading melodies of the Sonata by Srul Irving Glick, a Canadian classic in the flute repertoire. Next stop, the Sonatine by Henri Dutilleux, brings us to France and showcases the amazing virtuosity of French flute music. Then 3 Melodies by Edmonton composer Joseph Cheukman Lai showcases beautiful polyrhythmic writing and takes inspiration from Lai’s Chinese heritage. And finally, the Sonata Latino by British composer Mike Mower lets us experience various Latin dance styles.

“As the pandemic still looms over us and the travel restriction still in place, the concert will be an imaginary vacation around the world,” adds MacDonald. “We hope our musical interlude might be just what you need to tide you over until we can travel again.”

Postcards from An Imaginary Vacation takes place at 2:00pm on August 15, 2021, at the Polaris Centre for the Performing (8, 261051 Wagon Wheel View, Rocky View County). Tickets are $20 for general admission or $25 for a VIP experience and the livestream broadcast is available for free for those who would like to watch it from the comfort of their home.
