Wagonstage Theatre celebrates 50th anniversary with outdoor summer performances

For half a century, the University of Calgary has engaged young artists in work integrated learning through Wagonstage, a touring theatre ensemble. It has become a summer staple in Calgary and you can win tickets to its 2021 main show, Bev the Builder.

Written by Maggie Kwong, audiences can meet a determined young beaver named Bev who is trying to learn how to fix a hole that has formed in her dam. Frustrated yet determined, Bev sets out on her own to find ways to build the dam, and meet some other forest animals who try to give her some advice along the way.

Wagonstage is one of the few options for family-friendly theatre in Calgary, particularly since the onset of the pandemic. During the summer of 2020, Wagonstage shifted its outdoor performances to accommodate bubbled and distanced families in its audiences.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021, the show is put on by emerging artists from the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) who write, design, direct, and present the piece.

“Over the years I have produced, directed, written for, and acted in Wagonstage,” says Clem Martini, award-winning playwright and SCPA drama professor, in a statement. “I was initially cast in that travelling theatre ensemble in the second year of my undergraduate studies. For me, Wagonstage was a wonderful, wonderful introduction to the power and potential of the theatre. Performed outside under an open sky, just as the first actors must have performed, you were completely at the mercy of the elements—the wind, the sun, the rain—and that developed in the cast a resilience and an ability to improvise when necessary.”

The University of Calgary continues to take a cautionary approach for the safety and well-being of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and all performances are in full compliance with the public health restrictions implemented by the Government of Alberta and The City of Calgary.

Bev the Builder runs each Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday until September 5, 2021, at containR (1020 2nd Ave. NW). Registration for this event is required and all the details can be found at scpa.ucalgary.ca.

Enter before noon on Thursday, August 12, 2021 for your chance to win a family pass for up to eight people for August 15, 2021.
