Join Mount Royal Kantorei, Kantorei Academy Orchestra, and the Bishop Carroll High School Chamber Choir for a musical journey from far, far away galaxies to middle-earth.

With songs made familiar through gaming consoles and big budget movies, this concert will be choral treat for pop culture and classical fans alike.

“You’ve heard these tunes all over the place—on television, radio, everywhere you go—and sometimes people don’t even realize where this music comes from. We want to highlight that,” says Mount Royal Kantorei Artistic Director’s John Morgan.

With music from the past 100 years of film to modern video games, programming a concert like this is a feast of choice.

“Video game designers are putting lots of resources into making really high quality music and high quality soundtracks,” says Morgan. “I have a feeling that the majority of people will recognize so much of this great music.”

Program highlights include music from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Civilization 4, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Final Fantasy VII—as well as the languages that go with them.

“We actually have fun with that in rehearsals,” adds Morgan. “Not only are they different languages, Tolken for instance, the Elvish is different depending on what age the books are in and he was a very detailed linguist. We try to be as conscious as possible towards the lyrics and this concert we have Sindarin, Sanskrit, Urdu, Swahili, Latin, and English.”

And Morgan encourages everyone to get into the spirit of the music.

“I would love for people to show up in costume as a character from their favourite movie or video game. Just have fun with it.”

The concert takes place 7:30pm on May 27, 2017 at Bella Concert Hall, Mount Royal University (4825 Mount Royal Gate SW).
