An intensive 10-day festival, this response to the Calgary Stampede features nightly performances, film screenings, and discussions by local, national, and international artists, filmmakers, curators, and writers.
Exploring interspecies relations, the intersectionality of the frontier, and feminist and Indigenous discourses, WILD is presented by Contemporary Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Underground Film Festival and M:ST Performative Art Festival. The project looks at the affectations of settler colonial romanticism and its persistence in performances of the “Wild West.”
Kicking it all off on July 7, check out Buffalo Boy’s Stampede Tickle and Slap, a performance by Adrian Stimson occurring throughout downtown Calgary. Keeping with the traditions of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, join Buffalo Boy and his band of merry revellers for the first ever Buffalo Boy parade. The festivities wind from Victoria School (411 11th Ave. SE) at 1:30pm, to Contemporary Calgary (117 8th Ave. SW) for its Stampede Lunch, then onto Globe Cinema (617 8th Ave. SW) for the opening reception.
