A collaboration between the artists of Making Treaty 7, Quest Theatre, and Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society for Young Audiences, here’s your chance to see We Are All Treaty People as it continues its national tour.
An important theatrical production, the cast and crew are currently in Calgary performing for schools around the city as well as a one-day public showing at the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.
We Are All Treaty People tells the story of the first day of grade six for two young girls. Alanna, a girl from Tsuut’ina, is new to the school and wonders why a certain girl keeps staring at her. Maya is curious because she has never met a First Nations person. But when a Trickster opens his knowledge bundle to reveal the shared history of the land of their ancestors, the spirit and intent of Treaty 7, the miscommunications involved, the intent of the Colonials, and the subsequent and ongoing challenges for Indigenous Peoples, is it even possible for them to become friends?
Told with Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists through songs, prayers, creative movement, and puppetry, the play aims to inspire positive relationships across cultures and generations.
“We have discovered that young people have a strong desire to know and understand the Indigenous history of Canada,” says Nikki Loach, Co-Director and Artistic Director of Quest Theatre, in a statement. “Although our play is quite localized… we are finding [it] resonates for many communities across Canada.”
The cast includes Blackfoot actor and activist Garret C. Smith, Siksika artist Elizabeth Ferguson, Stoney Nakoda musician Anders Hunter, Alexandra Dawkins, and Geneviève Paré.
