Commemorative art installation creates space to honour and remember

More than an art installation, this ceremony is all about creating space for the community to come together in the act of honouring and remembering missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people, as well as children that never returned home from residential schools.
Featuring more than 1,800 moccasin vamps donated by hundreds of caring and concerned individuals, this installation gives a visual representation of the lives that vanished without a trace and the travesty of justice.
Set up somewhat like a traditional lodge, the vamps are laid out on the floor in pairs so that it appears those represented are standing in their moccasins shoulder-to-shoulder around the periphery of the room, toes facing the visitors. Purposefully not sewn into moccasins, each one represents an unfinished life cut short and pays respect to their existence on this earth.
With free admission and open to all, the installation can be viewed Monday to Thursday from 12:00 to 8:00pm and Friday to Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00pm. An opening ceremony and feast takes place at 2:00pm on April 29 and with a closing celebration at 2:00pm on May 13.
