Waiting for the Parade
40th Anniversary production celebrates a milestone in Canadian theatre
- Location: Martha Cohen Theatre, Arts Commons 220 9th Ave. SE
- Price: $25 - $72
During World War II Calgary was a very different place to be. It was a training ground and a bustling young city during a time of loneliness and uncertainty.
John Murrell’s Waiting for the Parade premiered in 1976 and, 40 years later, ATP is once again staging this exploration of how women’s experience on the home front shaped the Canadian identity.
In it we meet five very different women, each waiting out the war in this charming and touching drama. They struggle, argue, sing, drink, dance, and together, they find a way to survive. Full of live music and popular songs from the war years, Kate Newby takes the directorial reigns and kicks off ATP’s 45th anniversary season with this beloved Canadian play.
“I look forward to introducing a new generation to this landmark of Canadian theatre in a production that reflects the faces in our community today,” says ATP Artistic Director Vanessa Porteous, in a statement. “It explores the human side of living together in a world of clashing values, and celebrates the spirit of helping your neighbour that Calgary is known for to this day. Come back to a time, not so long ago, when Bowness was a training ground for recruits, and a young woman ran a sewing shop on Centre Street, just around the corner.”
Waiting for the Parade runs September 13 to October 1, 2016 at the Martha Cohen Theatre, Arts Commons (220 9th Ave. SE). Are you a student? Check out ATP’s special student pricing at That $10 Ticket Thing on September 20, 2016.
