An examination of the recent rash of school shootings through the eyes of the mothers, Hope McIntyre’s Trauma is a digital theatre experience that you won’t want to miss from DIY Theatre.

The show explores themes of violence in our society and the need to find blame.

In it we see how two women, the mother of the victim and the mother of the shooter, react to this tragic incident in their children’s lives. Should the parents be blamed for the actions of their children? Why do these things happen? And how does a mother cope with the grief?

After having to postpone the original run in April due to the pandemic shut down, this streaming play is the opening production of DIY’s new theatrical season. And streaming isn’t without its complications. Originally running November 13 to 20, 2020, DIY Theatre has decided to push Trauma back by one week, allowing them to spend a little extra time in our post-production phase to fine tune some of the technical elements.

“There’s something really exciting about re-imagining Trauma as a digital production,” says DIY’s Artistic Director Shelby Reinitz in a statement. “I know the team is looking forward to taking advantage of what the platform can provide to enhance Hope McIntryre’s beautiful and heartbreaking story.”

Filmed in the stunning Contemporary Calgary space at the Centennial Planetarium, the production stars Danielle Martens as Ellen and Shelby Reinitz as Susan.

“Transferring a piece that is traditionally live and theatrical to a piece suiting a digital platform certainly walks a line,” explains Director Madeleine Taylor-Gregg in a statement. “Creating something that is effective in an online medium is very different than creating something effective onstage. So, there is a neat and galvanizing challenge to maintaining and honouring theatrical roots while also exploring this new digital world.”

Trauma runs November 20 to 27, 2020 and is presented nightly at 7:30pm MST on YouTube. A link will be emailed out to ticket holders the day of the event.
