Based on the bestselling novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns brilliantly comes to life on the Theatre Calgary stage thanks to a partnership with American Conservatory Theater (ACT).

Coming off its critically-acclaimed run in San Francisco, Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns is a not-to-be-missed production. This hauntingly beautiful staging reveals the strength of the human spirit and tells the story of two women who are brought together by fate and cruelty in war-torn Afghanistan. Together they forge an unlikely friendship that leads to an act of unbreakable love.

Adapted for the stage by Irish-Indian playwright Ursula Rani Sarma, the production features live music from composer and saw player David Coulter. Directing the show is ACT’s artistic director Carey Perloff.

“Our passion for Khaled’s beautiful and heartbreaking novel is a long-standing one. The process of adapting this deeply personal story and working with playwright Ursula Rani Sarma has been extraordinary,” says Perloff, in a statement. “It has been a joy to bring the voices of one of the great Middle Eastern–American writers to the stage and to invite such a diverse company of actors to re-imagine one of the most beloved and best-selling novels of the past decade. Now more than ever, stories like Hosseini’s need to be told.”

A Thousand Splendid Suns runs March 7 to April 1, 2017 at the Max Bell Theatre, Arts Commons (220 9th Ave. SE). Tickets for all performances start as low as $35 and can be purchased through Theatre Calgary at 403.294.7447 or online at theatrecalgary.com.
