Celebrate the joining together of two very unlikely families. Full of family secrets, squabbling in-laws, embarrassing speeches, terrible dance moves, and those cousins you wish hadn’t shown up, Alberta Theatre Projects opens its season with The Wedding Party.

Transforming the Martha Cohen Theatre into cabaret seating for the first time in over 20 years, this hilarious gender-bending comedy is written by acclaimed Canadian playwright Kristen Thomson and directed by Alberta Theatre Projects’ Executive and Artistic Director Darcy Evans.

With the unique and intimate seating arrangement, the production gives audiences a ring-side seat as the outrageous reception spins out of control in real time.

“The success of The New Canadian Curling Club showed us that Calgary audiences love to laugh and The Wedding Party will give them the chance to do just that,” says Evans in a statement. “Think of the most outrageous wedding you’ve ever attended and multiply it by 100. That’s The Wedding Party.”

With a bar open onstage, you can even grab a cocktail or a bottle of wine and mingle before chaos breaks out and six of Calgary’s best actors portray the dozens of wedding guests in attendance.

The Wedding Party runs September 11 to 29, 2019 at the Martha Cohen Theatre, Arts Commons (215 8th Ave. SE). Wedding attire is encouraged.
