The Elephant Calf

Theatre Encounter launches its season of cruelty with absurd expressionist piece

Bertolt Brecht’s absurd expressionist piece gets a daring new interpretation at the hands of Calgary’s own Theatre Encounter.

First presented in 1963 as an addendum to Brecht’s full-length piece Man Equals Man, The Elephant Calf continues where the longer play leaves off. An exploration of performance, identity, and the loss of the self to the constructions of society, three soldiers meet on stage to present a morality play about an elephant calf, a banana tree and the moon. But the audience is hostile, the moral is murky, and just who is performing for whom?

Continuing to bring alternative productions of theatrical classics to Calgary stages, The Elephant Calf is a blend of physical theatre, sport, and performance art.

The Elephant Calf runs November 30 to December 10, 2016 at the Motel Theatre, Arts Commons (205 8th Ave. SE). There’s even a pay-what-you-can preview slated for November 29, 2016.
