Three women thought George Joseph Smith was the man of their dreams but now all three are dead. Vertigo Theatre concludes its 40th anniversary season with the haunting and lyrical exploration, The Drowning Girls.
Directed by Blake Brooker and staged by Denise Clarke, co-founders of Calgary’s own One Yellow Rabbit, this macabre production shares the story of three murdered wives who gather evidence by reliving the events leading up to their deaths.
“The mystery of how women fall prey to the predator husband is, sadly, a familiar trope, one that each new era informs within its own context,” says Brooker and Clarke, in a statement.
Originally conceived and written by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, and Daniela Vlaskalic at the 1999 Edmonton Fringe, The Drowning Girls premiered in its current form at Alberta Theatre Projects’ 2008 playRites Festival.
“The Drowning Girls is a unique and powerful construct that is even more poignant when we know that these characters are based on the real life victims of a notorious serial killer,” says Vertigo Theatre’s Artistic Director Craig Hall, in a statement. “While these words were not actually spoken by Beatrice Mundy, Alice Burnham, and Margaret Lofty, perhaps they lend power to these women by demanding that we see them as more than just victims on a list.”
Catch The Drowning Girls May 18 to June 11, 2017 at The Playhouse at Vertigo Theatre (115 9th Ave. SE). Previews run May 13 to 17 with the official opening May 18.
