Continuing a conversation started in November 2016, Spur launches it fourth Calgary festival on the topic of risk. A festival of politics, art, and ideas, Spur is a catalyst for change in Canada, produced by the Literary Review of Canada, in partnership with Diaspora Dialogues.
Using Canada’s sesquicentennial as a stepping stone, the festival talks about the issue of nation building with a particular look at what are we willing to risk to make a more just and equitable country.
“The mandate of the Spur festivals is to start the conversation, be it provocative, scary, silly, or all at the same time,” says Festival Director and Publisher of the Literary Review of Canada Helen Walsh, in a statement. “A too often dialogue becomes that buzzword we’re probably all tired off—a social bubble—talking to people who agree with us, without taking a hard look at the larger picture.”
Touching on tough subjects like geopolitics, environment, energy, food, health, culture, economics, security, and education, the festival uses panel discussions, onstage interviews, movies, poetry, and readings to debate and explore the theme. Events include the Calgary premiere of Giants of Africa, a documentary about the successful creation of a youth basketball program in Africa.
