Stories from Early Chinatown

The Chinese community has been in Calgary since the early days of settlement. By 1885, the year after Calgary became incorporated as a town, the first Chinese residents were settled in the town centre. Despite racism and discriminatory government policies, the community slowly grew. Reflections: 10 Years Capturing Calgary’s Alt Music Scene

Music photographer Zoltan Varadi was inspired by the nice surprises he discovered as he began cleaning and scanning his old negatives during a year of pandemic lockdowns. Though some of his images were published on the pages of CJSW’s Vox Magazine, or FFWD Weekly, many have remained unseen, even by Varadi himself. This exhibit serves as an extension of the Community Storytellers exhibition.
