An exciting collaboration with Peter Balkwill of the Old Trout Puppet Workshop and Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, MIMIC fuses two highly physical wordless forms along with a percussive score by the Nick Fraser Ensemble.

Bringing together the DJD company with puppets and other animated objects, this premiere production is brimming with limitless possibilities and a broad sense of wonder.

“This collaboration has been simmering on the back burner for many years,” says DJD Artistic Director Kimberley Cooper, in a statement. “I’ve always been fascinated by puppets and their similarity to dancers as wordless storytellers. I have been a great fan of Peter’s work for many years and I am thrilled to be working with him on this project.”

Drawing upon images and ideas from the Romantic Era, the title of the show comes from the idea that both dance and puppetry are acts of mimicry. The two wordless forms ebb and flow together throughout MIMIC, animating the inanimate and colliding to reinvent how we tell stories.

MIMIC runs April 19 to May 5, 2018 at the DJD Dance Centre (111 12th Ave. SE) with a special gala performance at 6:30pm on April 26.
