A true iconoclast among British filmmakers, Ken Russell’s films continue to maintain their ability to shock, awe, and delight. Join Calgary Cinematheque for the season’s first series and get a look at five films from the flamboyant and controversial director.

His decadent cinema suggests that civilization may not be so civilized after all. Often controversial, Russell always maintained the courage of his convictions and a defiant consistency of vision. Never beholden to conventional standards of good taste, Russell’s films continue to maintain their ability to shock, awe, and delight.

The series kicks off on October 18 with a screening of Women in Love, an audacious screen adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s classic 1920 novel, followed by The Devils on October 25, Altered States on November 8, and Mahler on November 15. It all wraps with his iconic cult classic and the ultimate rock opera, Tommy, on December 6.
