A powerful expressionist play about the status of women in an increasingly mechanized society, graduate student Zachary McKendrick directs the production as his MFA in Drama thesis.
“I have been fascinated with this play since I encountered it in the fall of 2017. As I read the script I was struck by its contemporary resonance,” he explains in a statement. “We can still see the fight for equality, visibility, agency, and autonomy within patriarchal and misogynistic social structures.”
Machinal runs February 8 to 16, 2019 at the Reeve Theatre, University of Calgary (210 University Court NW).
