Arguably Puccini’s most famous and beloved composition, La Bohème follows the lives of a group of young artists as they eke out an existence on the bohemian fringes of Paris. Join Calgary Opera for this stunning season opener.
Director Brenna Corner brings her innovative and whimsical touch to this much-loved classic, set against a sweeping, stylized backdrop of the 19th century city of lights. Irresistible in its witty, passionate blend of joy and sorrow, this production is accompanied live by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Italian-American maestro Jonathan Brandani.
With Puccini’s wonderful music and a love story that has resonated through the ages, La Bohème remains one of the best-loved operas of all time. Further bolstering its exuberant score is a chorus of over 55 singers including 16 children from the Cantaré Children’s Choir.
La Bohème also marks the first production under the artistic leadership of Calgary Opera’s celebrated new Grammy and JUNO Award-winning Artistic Director Bramwell Tovey.
“I couldn’t be happier to be here in Calgary, a city that’s been so welcoming to me, to present La Bohème along with such an incredible cast and artistic team,” says Tovey in a statement.
The show is a great introduction to opera and a timeless favourite for fans.
La Bohème runs November 9, 13 & 15, 2019 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium (1415 14th Ave NW). The show is performed in Italian with English titles.
