If you’re a word fan, the Calgary JCC has the perfect festival for you. The annual Jewish Book Festival allows book enthusiasts to browse hundreds of books for sale alongside an exceptional lineup of authors and influencers sharing inspiring stories.
“We are so thrilled to present yet another exciting book festival that features renowned and emerging writers,” says Shula Banchik, Cultural Arts Manager at the JCC, in a statement. “The Jewish Book Festival not only brings the latest and most interesting selection of books, but it is also an opportunity to listen to authors, ideas and current conversations that make up the fabric of today’s Jewish world.”
The book sale is organized in partnership with Owl’s Nest Books and the selection is carefully curated to bring the very best of books including contemporary titles by Jewish and Israeli authors, books on Jewish thought, humour, politics, history, travel and more.
Look for meet and greets, a kids storytelling corner, book presentations, and signings throughout the week and make sure you check out the kick off concert dedicated to Shalom (Hebrew for peace) on December 4.
Also of note is the fact that this year’s festival is dedicated to the memory of two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Elie Wiesel and Shimon Peres, and features a tribute day with storytelling and speakers.
The week rounds out with a finale showcasing folksinger and founder of Stringband, Bob Bossin with a musical show about Davy the Punk and the gambling underworld of the 30s and 40s in Toronto.
The Jewish Book Festival runs December 4 to 11, 2016 at the Calgary Jewish Community Centre (1607 90th Ave. SW) with many free events. The festival is open to the general public and people of all ages are encouraged to come. The full schedule can be downloaded here.
