Returning from India with two hot new releases, Hidden Gems Film Festival kicks off 2017 with this powerful double screening.
Highlighting the country’s gender violence, Daughters of Mother India portrays the aftermath of the gang-rape of a young medical student on a moving bus in 2012. Acting Sgt. G. Woods from Calgary Police Services’ Diversity Resource Unit will comment after the film.
Then stick around for India In a Day. Backed by Google, it asked millions of people in India to use their phone and record their lives. An edited collection of that footage by Canadian director Richie Mehta, India in a Day showcases 24 hours of everyday Indian life. Shot on October 10, 2015, over 160,000 clips were uploaded resulting in over 400 hours of footage that took 14 viewers three months to review.

The screening starts at 2:00pm on January 29, 2017 at the Alberta College of Art + Design (1407 14th Ave. NW). Tickets are $15 and Hidden Gems President and Founder Niru Bhatia will also be on hand making this the perfect time to pick up a yearlong membership for $25.
