Back for its 13th year, join Quickdraw Animation Society for its annual festival showcasing the best of independent animation from around the globe.

The Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival (GIRAF) celebrates the spirit of independent, underground, and experimental animation. This year, the entire festival emphasizes the spooky, the supernatural, and the occult, and the mood will be set at the opening gala with a live performance and animated projection from local musician Hermitess alongside Sébastian Laudenbach’s gorgeous adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale The Girl Without Hands.

Winner of both the Jury Prize and the award for Best French Film at the Annecy Animation Festival, Laudenbach’s film is proof of the endless flexibility of animation and uses an impressionistic, painted style.

Other festival features include stop motion science-fiction film Junk Head, a two-part Satashi Kon retrospective with Perfect Blue and Paprika, and a spotlight on online animation collective Late Night Work Club. The week also includes workshops with visiting artist Sean Buckelew and Brandon Hearty as well as an incredible shorts lineup.

GIRAF Animation Festival runs November 23 to 26, 2017 and the full schedule can be found at giraffest.ca.
