Get ready to grab your fill of pancakes, country music, and community, the Calgary Stampede kicks off this week bringing with it a host of free events. Here’s what we’re checking out:

The Painted Windows Exhibition

Throughout Bridgeland-Riverside, East Village, and Victoria Park

A twist on a Calgary tradition, Buds of Buds presents this very cool exhibition featuring a variety of artists’ work on local business owners’ windows. Expressing what Alberta culture and heritage means to each artist, take an afternoon to walk around and explore. You can even vote for your favourite one—the artist who painted the window with the most votes will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize. Other awards include a $1,000 Jury’s Selection and a $500 Celebrity’s Choice.

Following the performance, a parade led by Stimson will head to the Globe Cinema for another performance and the reception for WILD: Fabricating a Frontier.
