- Location: Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium (1415 14th Ave. NW)
A work of breathless horror, 18-year-old Mary Shelley’s astonishing literary masterpiece Frankenstein celebrates its 200th birthday and Alberta Ballet is staging a not-to-be-missed homage.
Jean Grand-Maître’s Frankenstein features a massive multi-media set design, sophisticated state-of-the-art projections, and a powerful, haunting soundtrack. This highly-anticipated world premiere showcases six leading-edge designers.
“The designers and I believe that by transposing this terrifying story to our present time we will have a more indelible effect on our patrons. It will somehow connect stronger because of how the audience is going to relate to the technology, the advance of artificial intelligence, stem cell research, and cloning,” says Grand-Maître in a statement. “It also reinforces the brilliance of this masterpiece. She was quite ahead of her time. In every way this book captured something that was of its time but was also eternal.”
Transported to a modern setting, the production tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a hideous creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. See Frankenstein’s creature reincarnated on stage and through movement featuring a mix of both contemporary and classical ballet styles.
Frankenstein runs October 23 to 26, 2019 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium (1415 14th Ave. NW). Costumes are encouraged.
