When Shakespeare’s most delightful and deplorable character, Sir John Falstaff, is confronted with his final scene, it’s not what he expected.
One Yellow Rabbit kicks off its 2016/17 season with the world premiere of iconic Canadian playwright John Murrell’s Fat Jack Falstaff’s Last Hour.
A fictional character who appears in three plays by William Shakespeare—The Merry Wives of Windsor and both parts of Henry IV—Falstaff is a fat, vain, boastful, and cowardly knight. Living large and loud, when he arrives at his own end he is forced to confront disappointment, confusion, and a world that is anxious to leave him behind.
“We are pleased to be presenting, for the third time, a world premiere from this great Canadian writer at the height of his powers,” says One Yellow Rabbit’s Artistic Director Blake Brooker, in a statement.
Murrell’s first new play in four years, Fat Jack Falstaff’s Last Hour stars the playwright as Jack Falstaff alongside One Yellow Rabbit’s ensemble members Denise Clarke as Nell Quickly and Andy Curtis as Ensign Pistol.
“One Yellow Rabbit is my theatre of choice to do new works. They have warmly adopted me into their creative ensemble,” says Murrell in a statement. “I am thrilled to bring to life, with my beloved theatre family, my imagined take on the final hour of life of one of Shakespeare’s greatest characters”.
Fat Jack Falstaff’s Last Hour runs October 25 to November 5, 2016 at the Big Secret Theatre, Arts Commons (215 8th Ave. SE).
