With more than 30 exhibitions alongside tons of special events, February is a great time to love photography. Don’t miss this month-long, province-wide festival of ground-breaking works as it takes over Alberta.

The 16th annual Exposure Photography Festival should be on your to-do list each and every February. With exhibitions, artist talks, opening receptions, workshops, panel discussions, and more, the entire month celebrates the art of photography in all its forms.

Exposure explores what photography is, what it can be, its place in contemporary art, and the future of the medium.

This year, Exposure Festival HQ can be found at Contemporary Calgary’s new home, the Centennial Planetarium (701 11th St. SW). Displayed within its dramatically bold brutalist spaces, be sure to check out three festival feature exhibitions—International Open Call, Emerging Photographers Showcase, and 2019 Emerging Photographer of the Year, Boon Ong’s, Our Closets.

Other Calgary highlights include a special launch weekend, an ask me anything panel, and a night photography seminar. Exposure’s outdoor exhibition, The Fence, also makes its annual appearance, and you can even see Vivian Maier: In Her Own Hands, an exhibition of over 100 revealing photographs capturing American city life, at Glenbow.

The Exposure Photography Festival runs January 31 to February 29, 2020 at venues around the province. The full schedule can be found at exposurephotofestival.com.
