Although it might not feel like it, spring is on its way and with it comes a fresh batch of visual arts events for you to hit up. April brings a bunch of new exhibitions alongside a ton of show and sales, pop-up events, and much more.

Walking With Our Sisters Calgary: Commemorative Art Installation

More than an art installation, this ceremony is all about creating space for the community to come together in the act of honouring and remembering missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people, as well as children that never returned home from residential schools. Featuring more than 1,800 moccasin vamps donated by hundreds of caring and concerned individuals, this installation gives a visual representation of the lives that vanished without a trace and the travesty of justice.

Centred around the national flower of Costa Rica, Juan Ortiz-Apuy pays homage to his country of origin in an installation that functions as a metaphor for situations caught in similarly uncertain and precarious conditions. An exhibition by Frida Kahlo Museum – Casa Azul/Diego Rivera Museum; Banco de Mexico Fiduciario en el Fideicomiso Museos Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, Glenbow brings the first Canadian showing of Frida Kahlo: Her Photos to Calgary. The show has travelled to 12 cities in seven countries, received more than half a million visitors, and is a treasure trove of images previously locked away in the Kahlo estate archives for more than 50 years.

Organized by Glenbow, make sure you explore Sandra Sawatzky’s hand-embroidered illustrative tapestry that tells the story of how oil has impacted human civilizations around the world. The Black Gold Tapestry took nine years to complete with Sawatzky spending an average of eight to ten hours a day—every day—on the project either researching, drawing, planning, or embroidering.
