Join Calgary’s newest contemporary music ensemble, alta:nova, for this musical response to the ridicule and hilarity surrounding the 2016 US presidential election.
Hear works evoking the current political climate alongside musical pieces devoted to each political candidate. Highlights include an arrangement of Radiohead’s National Anthem recontextualized with clips from the 2016 campaign, an homage to Bernie Sanders in Louis Andriessen’s Workers Union, Pulitzer prize winner David Lang’s Cheating, Lying, Stealing, and a new commission by Marcin Swoboda called Just Let Him Build A Wall.
“We have a lot of fun together presenting music that captivates us, and returns ownership of the creative process back to the individual. We thought it would be great to create a musical response to the hilarity and ridicule of the American presidential election by putting together a concert with pieces embodying the spectacle of Trump, the disillusionment of people with Clinton, and the challenges inherent in a bipartisan system,” explains alta:nova clarinetist Erin Fung.
“It’s so important for artists to retain our identity, at the very least historically, as dissidents, and to develop artistic commentary for the political progression of the world.” she continues. “No one can escape the gravity and effect of this particular election! Of course we’re affected as Canadians by agreements like NAFTA and the TPP, but we also want to address the growing intolerance and divisive nature that the current political climate has nurtured.”
There will even be an effigy of Donald Trump in pinata form to conclude the festivities and act as a fundraiser for the group’s upcoming season.
