Cock
Award-winning work makes its Calgary debut
- Location: Motel Theatre, Arts Commons (2nd Floor, 225 8th Ave. SE)
- Price: $19.50 - $24.50
Not a battle of sexes but a battle of sexual orientation, Cock tells the story of a man who has identified as gay his whole life. On a break from his boyfriend, John accidentally meets a woman on the bus to whom he feels a strong attraction.
The show takes a playful, candid look at sexuality and the difficulties that arise from less than black and white societal expectations while exploring ambivalence in love and human nature through a mix of emotions, relations, and choices.
Mike Bartlett’s punchy story won an Oliver Award is 2012 after its debut at the Royal Court Theatre and makes its Calgary debut with Artists’ Collective Theatre (ACT).
“By removing some labels, we inadvertently add more, thereby reinforcing the buy-in to the moral principal that is dictated to us by the media,” says ACT’s Artistic Director, Amanda Liz Cutting, in a statement. “Even those who are forced to define themselves by a box will often ask others to choose where their preference lies. The societal hypocrisy of this is one of the many reasons why ACT wanted to examine this in a public setting.”
Cock runs March 21 to 30, 2019 at the Motel Theatre, Arts Commons (2nd Floor, 225 8th Ave. SE). The show contains crude and potentially offensive language and sexual content, viewer discretion is advised.
