In 1950’s small-town Saskatchewan, nine-year-old half-Chinese, half-Cree Yvette Wong struggles to find her in place in a small-minded community.
That is until an unexpected ally helps set her on a path that is destined for greatness.
An uplifting story based on the life of Chinese-Canadian and Cree Senator Lillian Eva Quan Dyck, Café Daughter is a powerful, funny, and touching tale of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage.
Produced by Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre, in association with Alberta Aboriginal Performing Arts, this award-winning one-woman show comes to Calgary thanks to Alberta Theatre Projects and the High Performance Rodeo.
“It’s rare, vital, and truly spectacular to have such a powerful story about an Indigenous, Canadian woman told on a significant stage like ATP’s Martha Cohen Theatre,” says Festival Producer Laurel Green in a statement. “We are honoured to feature Café Daughter in our festival and champion the work of this creative team.”
