Exploring the life and times of Canadian icon and artist Emily Carr, A Love Letter to Emily C is a humorous and moving interdisciplinary marvel like nothing you’ve ever experienced.

A quirky dialogue between an artist and the creature she adored—her monkey Woo—the show is a fusion of theatre, poetry, visual art, and music. The piece was written by Calgary Poet Laureate Sheri-D Wilson and is being presented by Handsome Alice Theatre.

“I wanted to write a play about one of my favorite Canadian artists Emily Carr—and like she envisioned doing in her art, I want it to echo with beauty and wonder, like we feel in nature,” says Wilson in a statement.

The run also features a number of special events including a workshop with Chief Wedlidi Speck, the Ancestral Chief of the Nation that named Emily Carr, as well as an opening night blessing and book launch. You can even take part in a pay-what-you-can talking circle with Speck and Wilson, facilitated by Calgary Arts Development President & CEO, Patti Pon.

A Love Letter to Emily C runs May 3 to 11, 2019 at the Big Secret Theatre, Arts Commons (225 8th Ave. SE). Visit facebook.com for a breakdown of showtimes and special events.
