Directed by Alberta’s own Kaleigh Richards and adapted by Calgarians Tereasa Maillie, Christi Dos Santos-Wing, and Shelby Reinitz, join DIY Theatre for this refreshed version of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House.
When A Doll’s House first premiered in Denmark 140 years ago, it shook the theatre world. Adapted from that original text, this production finds Nora, a married woman, lacking self-fulfillment in a male dominated world. But determining her destiny disrupts society’s foundation.
What happens when our Nora finds herself in present day Alberta? Does she face a similar dilemma? How have her options changed? Does she choose a new beginning?
Featuring a fantastic cast of local actors working with an updated, modern text, A Doll’s House: Wild Rose promises to be a refreshing take.
“When I was approached to join this team, I was really excited to do something very different—fully produce a stage play in less than five months, and in a team environment. I’d done co-writing but this was more collaborative. Adapting from such a well know play was also a challenge—what to keep and what would not translate to a modern audience,” explains Maillie in a statement.
“Audiences who are familiar with the classic will enjoy the new twists, while those new to the work will still walk away with a sense of why this is timeless tale,” adds Dos Santos-Wing.
