Featuring local and international academics, entrepreneurs, community leaders, educators, musicians, spoken word poets, and artists, join GlobalFest as it explores Indigenous rights.
Since 2007, the GlobalFest Human Rights Forum has set out to promote diversity, cross cultural respect, and equality in our community, structured around the UNESCO’s Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination.
Presented by UNAC-Calgary, a branch of United Nations Association in Canada, the program encourages systemic change across the Canadian community in a positive and safe environment.
This year’s forum features over 15 presenters such as Julian SpearChief-Morris, Harvard Law’s first ever Indigenous President of the Legal Aid Bureau; Cherish Violet Blood, Canadian actress/vocalist/storyteller originally from the Kainai First Nations in Alberta; and an intimate performance by LightningCloud, a prominent Indigenous hip-hop duo from Los Angeles.
Forum topics include The Indigenous Labour Force, Exploring Sustainable Solutions, The Over-Representation of Indigenous Peoples in Canada’s Correctional Facilities, Two-Spirited Gender Identity, and the GlobalFest Urban Arts Program: Seeking Reconciliation through artistic expression.
The GlobalFest Human Rights Forum runs August 8 to 12, 2017 at the John Dutton Theatre, Calgary Public Library (616 Macleod Trail SE). Admission is free and includes a post-event reception with light snacks offered by Aahksoyo’p Indigenous Comfort Food. For more information head to globalfest.ca.
