Aboriginal Music Day
National Music Centre explores the legacy of Canadian Indigenous music icons

Coinciding with celebrations happening across the country in honour of National Aboriginal Day and Aboriginal Awareness Week, head to Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, for live music programming and educational tours that explore the legacy of Canadian Indigenous music icons.
Highlighting the importance of music to the community today, on-site programming includes live music from Cree singer-songwriter Walter Macdonald White Bear and Metis roots artist Dorothy Walker. There will even be traditional Indigenous dance performances from Thundering Nations and much more.
“While the country is coming together to recognize Canada 150, this is also an opportunity to look beyond the anniversary of Confederation and explore the role of music to support truth and reconciliation with Canada’s Indigenous Peoples,” says Adam Fox, NMC’s Director of Programs, in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming Indigenous and non-Indigenous visitors to Studio Bell to enjoy a day of music and culture.”
Partnering with the Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary, NMC has dedicated the day to honour and recognize the distinct heritage, cultural practices, and outstanding musical contributions of Indigenous Peoples.
Aboriginal Music Day at Studio Bell runs June 21, 2017 at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre (850 4th St. SE) and is included with paid admission to Studio Bell. To support accessibility on Aboriginal Music Day at Studio Bell, the National Music Centre will be extending free admission on June 21 to visitors who identify as Indigenous or of Indigenous descent. Reception will accept identification or declaration upon entry.
