Samuel Gentle has heard God’s call three times—once while walking with his father, once in the aftermath of a terrible bus accident, and once at the birth of his daughter.

Directed by Royal Sproule and performed by Barrett Hileman, Calgary’s Fire Exit Theatre ends its 15th season with An Almost Holy Picture. In it we meet Gentle, the groundskeeper for The Church of the Holy Comforter, who has heard the voice but struggles to comprehend its mystery and his own bewilderment at loss.

“I first read this script almost eight years ago,” says Fire Exit Theatre’s Artistic Director Val Lieske, in a statement. “It has sat with me and I kept coming back to it. I think I was waiting for us to be ready as a company and our audience to be ready. This is a story about faith, despair and redemptive love. But it’s not an easy journey.”

An Almost Holy Picture runs April 26 to 30, 2017 at the Engineered Air Theatre, Arts Commons (225 8th Ave. SE) Please note, the show contains strong language and adult themes.
