Students and artists team up to explore the stress of student life in devised production

An original devised theatre piece created with the students of Western Canada High School’s Drama Program and Ghost River Theatre, Exploder explores the stress of student life on stage.
Created by students and Ghost River’s award-winning artistic team, the new show is a high octane theatrical experience that features almost 20 performers, crew members, and professional designers. Exploder looks at what it means to be a teenager today and explores their joys, thoughts, triumphs, fears, stresses, and epiphanies.
“Do well on an exam and success awaits—fail an exam and it feels like you are a failure and your future suddenly grows dim. There is an awful lot of pressure to deal with when you are trying to reconcile the collision between the past you, and the future you in the present moment,” says Ghost River Artistic Director Eric Rose, in a statement.
WCHS’s Drama Specialist and Program coordinator Caitlin Gallichan-Lowe has been guiding the process and was impressed with the students’ willingness to explore tough subjects.
“I am so grateful to have been able to witness these brave young artists dive into the devising process with Eric Rose and Louise Casemore. They have pushed and stretched themselves with courage and tenacity,” says Gallichan-Lowe in a statement. “I can’t wait for audiences to see such daring, precise, and artistically inspiring work.”
Exploder runs April 25 to 28, 2017 at Western Canada High School (641 17th Ave. SW). Tickets are $13 at the door.
