Join Luminous Voices as it explores the themes of travel and life’s journeys—both expected and unexpected—through music. The concert features a world premiere from Calgary-born composer Heather Schmidt.

Written for choir and piano, In Canadian Woods is set to texts by early Canadian immigrant writers from England—Susanna Moodie and Catherine Parr Traill. Dr. Irene Kyle commissioned the piece in memory of her parents.

“There was always music in our house when I was growing up,” says Kyle, in a statement. “And that encouraged my life-long love and enjoyment of music. As I searched for a way to honour my parents, I thought a commissioned piece, which could be performed for many years to come, would be an amazing way to celebrate their lives.

“I discussed my idea with Heather and we decided to focus on the theme of celebrating the role of immigrants—my father immigrated from Russia in 1907 and my mother from England in 1908—in building our country and our lives,” she adds. “That the writing and performance of this piece would coincide with Canada’s 150th anniversary was an added bonus, as Canada has offered a refuge and safe haven for immigrants since its very beginning.”

Schmidt, who currently divides her time between Los Angeles and Toronto, began studies in piano and composition at the age of four. At 21, she became the youngest student to receive a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University.

The program also features other travel-themed music, including the Bach motet Fürchte dich nicht, Wadsworth’s Come to the Road, and Frank Ticheli’s Constellation.

The Journey takes place at 3:00pm on February 12, 2017 at the Bella Concert Hall, Mount Royal University (4825 Mount Royal Gate SW).
