Spring Awakening
StoryBook Theatre opens season with a coming-of-age musical in an alternate format
A season opening that looks and feels very different, StoryBook Theatre isn’t letting COVID-19 stop its upcoming production of Spring Awakening.
Kicking off the theatre’s 44th season digitally, the show explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable.
“We may not be able to present our shows to a live theatre audience—yet—but we are excited by the potential this challenge presents and we are moving forward with the option to stream shows online exclusively to our ticket holders. No matter what, every ticket holder will still receive a wonderful production by an incredible community of artists,” explains JP Thibodeau, Artistic Producer of StoryBook Theatre and the production’s director, in a statement.
And despite a technological hiccup resulting in a postponement and date changes, the show is ready to go on. The production can now be seen September 4 and 5 live followed by an on-demand stream for both shows available until September 30.
The winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Spring Awakening is a landmark production that is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality, and rock and roll.
“You can expect a lot of music with a pop-rock influence, in-depth conversations, and themes that explore sexuality, suicide, love, coming of age and many more,” continues Thibodeau. “Definitely a bit different than what our audience might be used to seeing, but it’s the perfect story to tell with our cast of Student Summer Intensive Program students.”
The program has seen more than 300 students work through a summer of intense musical theatre training since its creation in 2014. This year was no exception as students navigated both online and in-person rehearsals to create this show, making it one for the history books.
Spring Awakening runs September 4 to 30, 2020 online and tickets are $32 per viewing code. Learn more about streaming at storybooktheatre.org.
