A deal with the devil is on the table as Calgary’s Ambrose University Theatre presents Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus.
Doctor Faustus, a well-respected German scholar, grows dissatisfied with the limits of traditional knowledge and decides he wants to learn the practice of magic. For his first trick he calls the devil, Mephistopheles, to be his servant, but he serves Lucifer first.
“Faustus is a morality play,” says Val Lieske, Associate Director of Ambrose University’s Theatre Program, in a statement. “The purpose of a morality play is to essentially depict a battle between the forces of good and evil in the human soul. I think we need more of these in our art and stories today—very clear consequences of choices. We have a tendency to water down the dark or water down the light, but you need both to tell a good story and to tell the truth of our lives.”
Directed by Kelly Reay, the show runs for four performances only December 1 to 3, 2016 at the Engineered Air Theatre, Arts Commons (225 8th Ave. SE). Tickets are available at the door or by calling 403.410.2000.
