A grand love letter to Calgary in the British tradition of the holiday pantomime, Slipper goes far beyond its billing as A Distinctly Calgarian Cinderella Story.
From interwoven social commentary to shoutouts about public art, our dry weather and, of course, the Calgary Stampede, Alberta Theatre Projects’ holiday production is jam-packed with local references. But beyond the local music (television jingles and all), the props (straw bales and Traveling Light), the story is captivating and heartfelt, making Rebecca Northan’s newest creation the perfect holiday affair for those who want something fresh.
In Slipper we meet Cinderella, a kind and thoughtful 17-year-old Calgary girl who just wants to get along with her family, do her work, and play her guitar. But when she bumps into handsome time traveler Eddie Prince, her life gets tossed upside-down.
The family-friendly adaption certainly has a Loose Moose feel (a purposeful homage to Northan’s local roots) but the polish and perfection of an ATP holiday show. It’s a fun, funny, and delightful production that’s well worth checking out this season.
