This season there is a good chance you’ll be swinging by Calgary’s own Arts Commons at least once.
With tons of great performances from the Calgary Philharmonic, Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, and many more, there’s lots of reasons to visit, just make sure you give yourself a chance to explore. There’s plenty to feast your eyes on including a spooky Dadaist Halloween party as well as a number of fresh and intriguing visual arts displays.
A Time and Place, Revisited

+15 Soundscape, Arts Commons
When walking through the +15 at Arts Commons, always make sure you lend a ear to the sounds. This fall hear a cyclical story of song and soundscapes inspired by—and made exclusively from—the Canadian Arctic. Created by Vancouver-based electronic music produce, DJ Michael Red, this sound installation also features JUNO Award-winning Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq.

Window Galleries – Fall 2016

Window Galleries, Arts Commons (beside Max Bell Theatre)
Humour, self-awareness, and abstraction collide in the Window Galleries this season. This layered collection of meta-work comes from three talented and emerging artists. Rhys Farrell’s Patterns on Patterns features paintings and sculptures dealing with the combination of pattern and arrangement, exploring collages and paintings-within-paintings. Lindsay Wells’ Cruel Triumphs sees a series of representational abstract paintings of cats, vases, and wilting flowers, which are mutated and deformed to represent crazed desire, ownership, and feminine impulse. And lastly Pieter Kuschke’s This is a Painting explores what makes up a painting, and what paintings are to modern art.

Don’t miss Calgary artist Lyndon Navalta’s labour of love that examines the beauty of LGBTQ men. With a successful career in illustration, art direction, as well as animation with the National Film Board of Canada, this marks Navalta’s first gallery exhibition. Full of illustrations, he reveals the subject’s animalistic masculinity as well as their seductive glamour—a delicate balance of magic and power.

Frederic Bigras-Burrogano showcases his ongoing series that explores the phenomenon of North American towns that are named using the borrowed names from other cities of the world. This project uses photography, research and mapping to explore their connection as well as preconceived notions concerning their aesthetic.

Skins and Shirts

TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary’s +15 Window
This installation features an ongoing photographic project by Polina Teif and Shannon Garden-Smith that returns images taken from the storefront back to the surface of the window. Using photographs digitally printed on adhesive window vinyl, the installation mixes image, body, surface and material disintegration.

Wake Up!

Untitled Art Society +15 Window
Part of the M:ST Performative Art Festival, the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) and Untitled Art Society present Jessie Short’s Wake Up! at both Arts Commons and Casa in Lethbridge. Short will also be performing We’ve, a durational performance piece, on October 25 as part of the M:ST Festival.

The Dadaist Halloween Party

Hapenings #6 is coming and this time it’s a Dadaist themed Halloween party! Come dressed up in your wackiest Avant-Garde attire and show off your inventive side. The party also acts as a venue wide artist reception and hosts activities, live performances, a cash bar, a Day of the Dead Altar, and much more. It’s free but remember to leave the kidlets at home for this one. This event is a 18+.

+15 Window Galleries Closing Reception

Celebrate each of the exhibits hosted in the +15 at this closing reception. Artists will be on hand to speak about they work and afterwords, everyone is invited to head to the Palomino (109 7th Ave. SW) for drinks afterwards (save 15% off your bill by showing a card from one of the exhibitions). Admission is free and all are welcome.
