Decidedly Jazz Danceworks remounts its 2017 hit that re-imagines the famous story about two star-crossed lovers. With live music and dance in true DJD style, this performance is not-to-be-missed.

The production comes on the heels of a successful tour of eastern and central Canada this past fall, and is presented as part of the 34th annual High Performance Rodeo.

Juliet & Romeo is inspired by the classic tale of the star-crossed lovers. The themes of love and violence come to wrestle and play in a whole new world adapted by Cory Bowles and featuring the DJD Company of dancers alongside a four-piece band.

“It is still recognizable, but not in the traditional way,” says DJD Artistic Director Kimberley Cooper in a statement. “I find this story to be so seductive and, because it is so well known, that gives us permission to dive into and invent different ideas in or about the story. Audiences from Charlottetown to Kingston enjoyed the twists and turns in the re-imagining of this passionate and tragic tale and we are looking forward to bringing it back to Calgary for this year’s High Performance Rodeo.”

Narrated by the one-and-only Natasha Korney with original live music by the Nick Fraser Ensemble, the piece breathes new life to one of Shakespeare’s best known and loved works.

Juliet & Romeo runs January 16 to 26, 2020 at the DJD Dance Centre (111 12th Ave. SE).
