A timely exploration of consent, accountability, memory, and attraction from Downstage, don’t miss this world premiere production by Albertan playwright Elena Eli Belyea.

In it, Jordan, Aiden’s ex, shows up at Aiden’s apartment to confront her about the allegation that Jordan sexually assaulted her two years ago. Each performance showcases one of two casts—an opposite sex and same-sex couple on alternating nights.

The unique approach invites audiences to investigate how their positions shift, based on the gender of the participants.

“I’m very excited for Downstage to share the world premiere of Smoke with Calgary audiences,” says Clare Preuss, Artistic Director of Downstage, in a statement. “Elena Eli Belyea has crafted a nuanced piece that is purposefully ambiguous and asks big questions around memory, love, passion, and the value of consent. It has a raw power that grabs you and won’t let go—it’s a wild ride.”

Smoke runs February 13 to 23, 2019 at the Big Secret Theatre, Arts Commons (225 8th Ave. SE). Tickets are $25 or free through Downstage’s Pay-It-Forward program.
