A charming retelling of the story of the Magi from the point of view of a young disabled boy,  join the Calgary Opera for this one-act family production.

Living in poverty with his widowed mother near Bethlehem, Amahl sees a bright star in the sky and tells his mother to go look, but she wearily brushes him off. That same evening, three kings bearing gifts for a holy child visit Amahl’s meagre hut and seek shelter. Amahl has no treasure of his own to share but offers his crutch to baby Jesus—and finds himself suddenly cured of his disability.

Featuring Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artists, Gian Carlo Menotti’s tale was the first opera composed specifically for television audiences.

Amahl & the Night Visitors runs December 7 to 9, 2018 at the Mamdani Opera Centre (1315 7th St. SW).
