Opera in the Village
4th annual celebration invites you under the Chautauqua Tent
- Location: Chautauqua Tent 618 Confluence Way SE
- Price: Free - $25
The high notes will still be hit this summer but Calgary Opera’s Opera in the Village will be a bit different than the past three.
Mixing free, family entertainment with paid performances bookending each day, Opera in the Village will be more relaxed, but just as fun.
“Calgary Opera, along with Imperial Oil, is excited to present Opera in the Village once again in East Village this summer for the fourth consecutive year,” said W.R. (Bob) McPhee, General Director & CEO of Calgary Opera, in a statement. “Opera in the Village is Canada’s only outdoor summer opera festival, and we are proud to bring free opera and musical performances to the community.”
It all takes place under the Chautauqua Tent for two weekends—August 13 to 14 and 20 to 21. At 1:00pm you can see a family-friendly performance of Hansel & Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck and adapted by Aaron Coates. Tickets are only $15, making it the perfect time to see this classic abridged tale performed by Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Program alumni.
Then from 2:00 to 7:00pm, audiences are asked to register for a free eco-wrist band to see performances from Front Row Centre Players, Vocal Group KIVA, Ukrainian Tangos with Stephania Romaniuk, Foothills Brass Quintet, Cantare Children’s Choir, Calgary Fiddlers and Calgary Stampede Band of Outriders.
It all wraps with Cowtown Opera’s Archiebaldo at 7:00pm, a cheeky, adults-only comedy set in the quiet village of Riverderci. Tickets are $25.
Opera in the Village takes place August 13, 14, 20 & 21, 2016 under the Chautauqua Tent (618 Confluence Way SE). For more information on how to purchase tickets and to register for the free family entertainment visit calgaryopera.com/oitv.
