Teaming up for a networking event to connect and empower bold women of colour as well as individuals who identify with diverse backgrounds, Afros In Tha City and Femme Wave present sheTALKS.

Founded in 2016, Afros In Tha City began as a private Facebook group for women of colour, specifically Black women, to come together to discuss issues related to the Afro hair movement. Powered and moderated by founders Daphnée-Lyne Carrié and Kimberley Jev from two different parts of the province, the two long-time friends would see the group grow to a full and vibrant group of over 400 women of different and diverse backgrounds.

“I just got tired of being the only Black girl in the room, to be honest,” says Jev in a statement. “In fact, you know what I’m tired of being the only woman of colour in the room period. It’s a bit strange when you are attending events and going to shows and embracing the arts and culture in Calgary. When you are actually attending events with coloured people performing and there is just you, the one Black girl in the room. I’m actually tired of paying to be uncomfortable. It breaks my heart. This is why we are putting on sheTALKS, I don’t just want a seat at the table anymore, I want many seats at the table.”

Attendees of the event can enjoy a four-course meal and cocktail of their choice as well as a celebration at the BLK RBT post-event.

sheTALKS takes place at 7:00pm on September 29, 2018 at Emilio’s Bistro and Bar (811 1st St. SW). A percentage of proceeds go to a charitable or not for profit organization dedicated to empowering youth in the city who are at-risk.
