Kicking off a new season with Joan Didion’s classic play, join Sage Theatre for this journalistic report from the edge of grief.

Directed by Jason Mehmel and starring local celebrated actor, Karen Johnson-Diamond, The Year of Magical Thinking is Didion’s account of the year following the death of her husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, and her attempts to make sense of her grief while tending to the severe illness of her adopted daughter, Quintana.

“Watching Joan [through Karen] process this mess and try to make sense of her loss, the grappling of an amazing writer putting these experiences down on paper is a transformative thing. As Joan searches for the expression of her grief, she discovers a way to describe things we all have experienced in a way that will never leave you after you experience it,” says Mehmel, in a statement. “Working with Karen Johnson-Diamond has been inspiring. She is a tireless artist, working hard to search for truth and clarity. Watching her engage with Joan as Joan engages with her grief is a career highlight for me.”

The Year of Magical Thinking runs September 27 to October 6, 2018 at Motel Theatre, Arts Commons (2nd Floor, 225 8th Ave. SE).
