Alberta College of Art + Design’s (ACAD) Illingworth Kerr Gallery is commemorating its 60th anniversary with an expansive retrospective exhibition exploring its elusive 60-year history—a feat that has never been done before.
Curated by Ashley Slemming, with the support of Dr. Jennifer Salahub as part of the IKG’s Curatorial Internship, don’t miss the first attempt to document the history of exhibiting art, craft, and design at ACAD. With the aid of the archival holdings of SAIT, Glenbow, the University of Calgary, and ACAD’s Luke Lindoe Library, the exhibition illustrates not only the past 60 years but also the four decades leading up to having a designated gallery space.
A timeline running through the exhibition compares events and programs in the gallery and ACAD alongside major events happening in Alberta, Canada, and internationally. The timeline also outlines the history of the college from when it was part of the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art in 1916, its autonomy from SAIT in 1985, and to the present day as it transitions from a college to university.
The opening reception coincides with Alberta Culture Days, the province’s largest celebration of arts, heritage, diversity, and community spirit, and you can swing by from 5:00 to 8:00pm on September 28. Be sure to check out additional free tours, workshops, and events that are family-friendly and open to the public throughout the weekend.
