Kicking off with a screening of Neil Diamond’s Reel Injun followed by a reception for Danni Black/Sui Taa Kii’s installation, The Revitalization is Real, join Untitled Art Society for four afternoons of Indigenous cinema.
Reel Injun documents the depiction of First Nations people in film, from the silent era to today. Featuring clips from hundreds of films, candid interviews with famous Native and non-Native directors, writers, and actors, it traces how the image of First Nations people in cinema have influenced the understanding and misunderstanding of their culture and history.
The Revitalization is Real is presented as part of The City of Calgary’s Indigenous Artist in Residency Program and, after the screening, make sure you stay for a reception featuring drinks and Indigenous cuisine by Liberty Rivers.
Reel Injun screens at 2:00pm on July 8, 2018 at Untitled Art Society (343 11th Ave. SW). Other films in the series are Adam Garnet Jones’ Fire Song on July 15, Jeff Barnaby’s Rhymes for Young Ghouls on July 22, and Noam Gonick’s Stryker on July 29.
