A multidisciplinary dark comedy about pipelines, vulnerable landscapes, and the impact of industrial expansion on First Nations peoples, join Downstage for Matthew MacKenzie’s unapologetically political play, Bears.
Starring award-winning Métis theatre artist Sheldon Elter, Bears is an Indigenous-led new Canadian play told through dramatic storytelling and choreography, a seven-person chorus, enchanting projections, and an evocative electronic soundscape.
Presented as part of its national tour, Alberta Aboriginal Performing Arts and Punctuate! Theatre’s show was originally developed in Edmonton and garnered five Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award nominations, and two wins for Outstanding Score and Outstanding Choreography.
Bears runs nightly at 7:30pm on April 4 to 7, 2018 at the Motel Theatre, Arts Commons (2nd Floor, 225 8th Ave. SE).
The public is also invited to check out a special performance of Christine Sokaymoh Frederick’s Minosis Gathers Hope at 11:00am on April 7, 2018 at the Motel Theatre, Arts Commons (2nd Floor, 225 8th Ave. SE).
This magical play for youth explores culture, racism, independence, and interdependence, and is an accessible opportunity for children eight and up to creatively engage in Métis and Cree culture.
