Based on Choderlos de Laclos’ 18th century novel, Alberta Ballet tackles one of the most emotionally destructive dramas ever told.

Featuring 30 classically-trained dancers, Dangerous Liaisons tells the story of La Marquise de Merteuil and Le Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals who use seduction as a weapon to socially control and exploit others. Originally created for the National Norwegian Ballet in 2000, Alberta Ballet’s Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maître has re-choreographed his ballet for the larger stage to take full advantage of the Jube’s panoramic space.

“These amazing individuals I work with daily in the studio have inspired and allowed me to push my creativity further in telling this intricate story of lust, seduction, and revenge,” says Grand-Maître, in a statement.

To tell the thriller’s complexities, the production features two distinct worlds on stage—dancers in full Louis XIV costumes portray the manipulative manners and the court intrigue of the period next to dancers in sensual costumes who interpret the corseted characters’ uncontrollable desires and emotions.

Dangerous Liaisons runs October 25 to 28, 2017 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium (1415 14th Ave. NW) and is intended for adults only.
